Part of our ongoing commitment to serving the Church is to make sure that all of our members have a strong foundation in their identity as disciples of Jesus Christ and Franciscan sisters or friars. The most important way to grow in their identity is through prayer, which is fostered during their time of formation both in community and during times of personal prayer.
Another way our members build a strong foundation is through their academic studies. Sisters and friars participate in house classes, in addition to studying at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, pursing a theology degree at the masters level. This gives the friar or sister comprehensive theological training, enabling them to teach religion in parishes and catholic schools, and to give theologically solid presentations at retreats and days of reflection.
Additionally, some of our sisters are currently studying in the Masters of Arts in Teaching program at Dominican University (River Forest, IL) in order to become licensed teachers in the state of Illinois. This is required to teach in the Catholic schools. Part of our apostate (work) is to teach religion in poor Catholic schools, and so it is essential that some of our members become licensed teachers.
We need your help to support the studies at Mundelein Seminary and Dominican University. Our tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year was just over $20,000–this does not include travel (gas) or related expenses.
